Why Jesus Had to Die
Matthew 26:20-30
Dr. Don Wilton

Palm Sunday reminds us of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, culminating with a Passover meal with his disciples. This observance had special meaning in Jewish tradition because it was a reminder of God’s deliverance of his people from death. The blood of a lamb painted on the doorposts of their homes spared them.
On a deeper level, that last Passover meal Jesus shared with his disciples before his journey to the cross, and our celebration of the Lord’s Supper today, signifies Jesus’ broken body and blood, shed for our sins. Jesus is our Passover Lamb. All of us are unworthy sinners, but because of Jesus’ self-sacrifice on the cross for our sins, we have the gift of eternal life.
In these uncertain days, when COVID-19 is sweeping our country and our world, do you enjoy the assurance of eternal life? Today, you can make the decision to confess your sins, repent, and accept Jesus Christ as your Savior. No matter what tomorrow holds, your decision to follow Jesus guarantees eternal life, even in the face of death. Decide now to choose life.
