Celebrate Recovery, a successful ministry based on the principles found in the Beatitudes, began at First Baptist Spartanburg in the fall of 2009 to encourage fellowship and celebrate God’s healing power from hurts, habits, and hang-ups. Celebrate Recovery gives people hope, healing, life, love, and, most of all, Jesus. All church members and nonchurch members are welcome to participate and discover the journey to full, Christ-like maturity. Those who would like to minister to hurting people are welcome and encouraged to attend.
“I see FBS as being a lighthouse, a place where people from not only Spartanburg County but all over the Upstate can come to grow spiritually and let the Lord get their lives back in order,” says Fred Thrailkill, facilitator of the new program. “When people come back home they need a strong spiritual peace to grab onto. Without the body of Christ they cannot completely recover. Our goal is to get folks back into church as active members, find them a place to work and help others.”
Rev. Sal Barone, First Baptist Pastoral Minister, says, “God doesn’t want us to live like there is no tomorrow. He wants us to live like there is no yesterday. We were raised to think that our yesterdays molded us. But Jesus said to us, ‘Oh no, I want to take you into the future with Me.’”
This exciting new ministry will meet on Friday night and will include a meal, praise and worship, and large and small group focus time. Ministry leadership and a support team are being recruited, including people with “12- step” experience. People are also needed to help with meals, praise and worship, welcoming, setting-up, etc. Thrailkill says, “Most folks do not have a place to turn to for the spiritual healing they need. Celebrate Recovery provides a safe place for folks to come, a nonthreatening environment where they are greeted with the love of Jesus. We want to welcome everyone with open arms.” Pastor of First Baptist Spartanburg Don Wilton reminds us, all people are welcome in God's House and we are the church, "Where everyone can invite anyone to come to First Baptist to encounter the Living one."
